Man knocked down by car travelling wrong way along Maidstone one-way street

A man has been run down by a car allegedly travelling the wrong way along a one-way street.

The accident happened in Pope Street in Maidstone yesterday afternoon at around 1pm.

The victim lives in the street near where the accident happened.

Witnesses say they saw a silver car came out of Bazalgette Rise and turn left - the wrong way - onto Milton Street, a one-way road.

The driver failed to stop and sped off, turning right into Pope Street.

The extent of the victim's injuries are not known.

Kent Police say they attended the incident at 1.17pm along with South East Coast Ambulance Service who took the pedestrian to hospital for treatment.

They say a car was later stopped in Tonbridge Road, Maidstone, and a 53-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and taken into custody.
