Man sets clothes on fire to stay warm at Maidstone Barracks train station

Emergency services sent to a fire at a railway station found the culprit was a man who had set fire to his clothes to keep warm while waiting for a lift home.

Police and fire crews rushed to Maidstone Barracks station last night after receiving reports of a blaze.

But when they arrived they discovered the flames were coming from clothes a chilly man had set fire to while waiting to be picked up.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said 'suitable advice' was given to the man.

It came on a busy night for officers, who also helped take a distressed woman to hospital after she was found at Canterbury East train station.

The woman was said to be 'suffering a mental health crisis' but is now safe and well.

A man was also found on the tracks at an undisclosed location in Kent and has been detained under the Mental Health Act.
