Black bins not collected for month in Brewer Street and Woollett Street, Maidstone

Another street in Maidstone has had to wait four weeks for bins to be collected.

Black bags have been piled high in Woollett Road where residents from Brewer Street also place their bags to be collected every other Wednesday.

They were last collected on June 30 and were supposed to be cleared on July 14, but because of a major fire at Mu Mu in Week Street, refuse trucks were unable to access the roads as part of their usual rounds.

Joanna Wratten from Brewer Street called Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) to see if the collection could be rescheduled but was told teams could not come back until the next scheduled date on Wednesday, July 28.

The 45-year-old said: "The bin men couldn't get through which can't be helped but I rang the council the next day and someone said they would come back but they didn't.

"A neighbour rang up again on the Monday and they said we'll have to wait two weeks.

"It's horrible out there, there are nappies on the floor and bags have all been torn open so there are probably rats out there.

"We're now expected to keep the black sacks in our garden and in this heat it's unpleasant."

Miss Wratten says there are approximately 16 houses affected by the issue.

Part of the Mu Mu complex was destroyed by flames in the early hours of July 14. Neighbouring buildings were able to open to clubbers last Friday.

At its height, it's estimated around 60 firefighters were in attendance and members of the public were warned to avoid the area.

Neighbours in Victoria Street faced a similar problem on July 14 when their black bags were not picked up because of a burst water main on nearby London Road.

Bags full of rotting food are attracting flies, maggots and foxes to the street.

It is also hoped they will be collected on Wednesday.

Maidstone Borough Council has been approached for comment.
