Faversham and Mid Kent MP Helen Whately faces backlash after tweet about Donald Trump's inauguration

A Kent politician has faced an online backlash after expressing her excitement at being at Donald Trump's inauguration.

MP for Faversham and Mid Kent, Helen Whately, tweeted a photograph of herself in the crowd, saying it was "incredible" to be in Washington for the ceremony on Friday.

She was there as the Conservative parliamentary representative.

But the tweet was met with disapproval by many followers, who took it to mean the MP supported President Trump and his controversial policies.

Mike Roberts responded saying: "Incredibly disappointing that you are supporting the inauguration of a misogynistic, egotistical bully. Why?" while Katie McGowan said: "You are validating his hate. I am ashamed to be your constituent."

Emma Brammer said: "WHA?! Are you serious? Congrats. Motivated me to to ensure you don't get to represent me again. Shame on you Helen."

Caroline Lamoon described the tweet as unbelievable, adding: "Why should you be proud of this? So disappointed. Supporting a sexist racist uninformed bully."

But former Faversham Town Councilllor Andy Culham was more supportive, saying: "Amazing opportunity Helen, very proud of you as our local Faversham MP representing the U.K."

The MP responded that the trip would not be put on her expenses.

Mrs Whately's office has been approached for comment.

Yesterday there were global protests to mark the first full day of Trump's presidency, including a march for women's rights attended by as many as 100,000 people in London.

The newly elected president was accused of sexual misconduct during his election campaign. He also advocated extreme vetting of Muslim immigrants.
