A man killed on the doorstep of a home in a quiet residential street was shot in the chest, an inquest has heard.

Emergency services rushed to Cambridge Crescent in Shepway, Maidstone on Sunday, March 17 where 54-year-old Andrew Jenkins, from Rochester, was found collapsed.

A woman passing by, Urszula Maliszenska, tried to save Mr Jenkins' life by putting him in the recovery position and performing CPR but he was pronounced dead shortly after paramedics and air ambulance crews arrived.

A post mortem report presented at the opening of the inquest today concluded that his medical cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police remained at the scene for the following two days and recovered a firearm.

Jeffrey Mills, also 54-year-old and of Cambridge Crescent, was arrested the following day and later charged with murder as well as possession of ammunition without a firearms licence and two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon.

He appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Thursday, March 21 but did not enter a plea.

He is likely to enter not guilty pleas at the next hearing in April before going on trial in September. He is expected to claim self-defence.

Mr Jenkins' death is the third alleged murder in Maidstone in less than three months, following the killings of 19-year-old Parwin Quriashi on Christmas Day and Wesley Adyinka on February 10.
