‘Out of control’ bonfire engulfs trees in flames on North Pole Road in Barming, near Maidstone

An ‘out of control’ bonfire spread to nearby trees and engulfed them in flames.

Fire crews were called to the scene on North Pole Road in Barming, near Maidstone at 11am yesterday (May 16).

Two fire engines attended and crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

There are no reported injuries and the cause is believed to have been a bonfire that spread flames to nearby trees.

Following the incident, the Kent Fire and Rescue Service has issued safety advice for anyone planning to light a bonfire:

• Keep bonfires to a manageable size, and build them clear of property and greenery

• Supervise the burning at all times

• When having a bonfire, always keep a bucket of water or a hosepipe nearby

• If a bonfire gets out of control, move to a safe place and call 999
