A petrol garage is set to close while it undergoes a complete overhaul.
The Shell station off the A249 in Detling Hill, between Maidstone and Sittingbourne, will shut for several months.
In August, plans were submitted to redevelop the site, next to the Detling Diner, on the Sittingbourne-bound carriageway.
The proposal outlines knocking down the existing sales building, garage and pumps to make way for updated facilities.
The forecourt will be relocated to the centre of the land, where a 287 sq m new sales building will be constructed.
It will feature two toilets, as well as a disabled toilet and paying facilities for fuel.
The back-of-house section will include areas for storage, food and staff, plus a walk-in chiller and office.
There will be four staff car parking bays to the rear of the site, and 12 customer spaces, including one disabled bay, at the front of the building.
The plans also outline “new fuel infrastructure” to be installed to bring the site up to current standards, including three new pumps on new concrete and kerb pump islands.
These will allow for the refuelling of six vehicles at any one time, as well as provisions for up to three HGVs on the southeast of the site.
An electric charging hub is also proposed the northwest section, allowing up to eight vehicles to use it at a time. A new canopy will be installed above it.
The existing tank chambers and tank lids will also be removed and replaced with two new 65,000-litre double-walled steel underground tanks, with four new tank chambers and lids.
A spokesperson for Shell told KentOnline the application had been submitted to “better serve our customers and the local community”.
Subject to approval, they said work would be scheduled to start in October 2026 and aim to be completed in spring 2027.
The plans have now been given the green light by Maidstone council.
The exact date the petrol station will shut is not yet known. Detling Diner will operate as usual.
