It began when police patrols spotted a suspicious BMW and requested it to stop.

It pulled over in Lower Stone Street but as officers approached the vehicle it moved off.

Very shortly after, with officers in pursuit, it collided with a Ford Fiesta travelling in the opposite direction along Wat Tyler Way, close to the flats at Sunningdale Court.

The driver of the Fiesta was unhurt but his passenger, a man in his 20s, was taken to hospital for treatment to a suspected broken collar bone. The vehicle was badly damaged.

The BMW driver fled on foot.

There was a large response by police and other emergency vehicles which led to the road being closed until gone midnight.

The police search did not find the suspect.

Police are now appealing to anyone with private CCTV or dashcam footage that might help identify the driver to contact officers on 01622 604100, quoting reference 46/1181/25.
