This followed reports that two people had collapsed and were in need of medical attention.

A spokesperson for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "Ambulance crews attended the scene and the male patients were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a serious condition."

Police inquiries continued at the site this morning and the cordon has now been lifted.

Mike Walker, who lives at an apartment block which oversees the area, said: "It started off just an ambulance and a police car then I looked out a few minutes later on and there was a huge army of emergency services."

Another resident Cergai Baban said there were three ambulances and seven police cars.
