Prom cancelled at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls after end-of-year muck up day pranks

Schoolgirls have had their prom dreams dashed after their headteacher cancelled the celebration following "muck up day" pranks that went too far.

Maidstone Grammar Schools for Girls (MGGS) pupils left school in tears yesterday afternoon after hearing the announcement.

So-called "muck up day" is a tradition in many secondary schools when Year 11 students pull pranks and get up to mischief on the last day of lessons.

In a letter to parents, head Deborah Stanley said: "The school cannot and will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour with significant impacts on the health, safety and well being of all in the school community, I am sorry for those students who have worked hard and were not involved.

"Our collective aim for all Year 11 students is that they are prepared and focused for their GCSE examinations. Staff are continuing to work hard with their classes to support Year 11 in their preparations between now and half term. I wish all Year 11 students the very best for their GCSE examinations and look forward to celebrating their successes with them in August."

The letter made clear that all those who had bought tickets would be refunded but the decision has been met with anger and frustration from parents.

Parents have begged the head to re-instate the Prom in emails and furiously taken to social media. Only five girls are believed to be responsible for the pranks out of 180 in the year.

One pointed out that the organising committee have seen their efforts wasted and that money has been spent on expensive dressed and shoes for nothing.

Another said it has caused "stress on the girls very close to their GCSEs".

The school has been contacted for comment.
