Sewage leak at Mote Park, Maidstone cleaned up

A park has returned back to normal after an overflowing manhole caused a "sewage river".

The leak near Maidstone Leisure Centre at Mote Park caused a stream of waste to flow down the road and onto the grass yesterday.

A giant puddle was formed and it started going towards the new adventure playground.

A passer-by said he had gone ankle deep in the waste and it was ' trickling down near the children's play area like a sewage river'.

But after work carried out by Southern Water and the Environment Agency went on throughout the evening a blockage was found and the mess has since been cleaned up.

A spokeswoman for Maidstone Borough Council said: "Work was carried out and we have been informed that the blockage was found, removed and everything environmentally cleaned.

"They also carried out an environmental check."

Last year the park had to be closed after a sewage pipe burst.

The new adventure playground is set to have its official opening on Thursday.

A spokesman for Southern Water said: "‘Our teams attended the overflowing manhole yesterday morning.

"The cause was found to be a partially blocked sewer.

"Our teams successfully managed to stop the flows into the lake by blocking up a drainage culvert.

"A small amount of wastewater did reach the lake yesterday morning. Due to the location of the sewer by the leisure centre this was highly dilute and appears to have had minimal impact on the lake.

"We’re continuing to investigate the cause of the blockage."
