Sinkhole opens on Allington Way pavement

A sinkhole which opened over the weekend has blocked a business owner from using her driveway.

Kim Kirk, 47, who works for Barbara Carpenter Wig Consultants, noticed the hole in Allington Way on Saturday on the way to Waitrose.

She said: "We drove off the drive and the back of the car went down - it felt as if we had gone off a kerb.

"We then saw the hole in the pavement and saw the depth of it. We called the Highways Agency and they were here within half an hour, they have been brilliant. At first they were expecting it to be a tiny pothole.

"Quite a bit more has fallen away since Saturday and we were standing watching it fall. We have recently just had the whole road done which I think was gas works."

A stretch of the pavement has been cordoned off, with pedestrians asked to cross the road around the sinkhole.

Mrs Kirk, whose company makes wigs for cancer patients, said: "This is a busy road and there is lots of traffic. The woman from Highways told us to monitor it over the weekend and if it got worse they said they would shut the road."
