Waitrose takes on Spurs Legends in a clash at the Gallagher Stadium

Staff from the Waitrose distribution centre in Aylesford took on the Spurs Legends in a charity football match at the Gallagher Stadium.

The game was watched by MP Helen Grant and the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Marion Ring, plus around 1200 supporters.

The clash succeeded in raising £9,000 to be shared between two charities: Maidstone Mencap and Space 2 Be Me.

Simon Barker who organised the game said: "A brilliant day was had by all, with a great community feel about it."

Mrs Grant, who has recently been appointed president of Maidstone Mencap, said: "It’s so great to see local business and charities working together for the good of the community and having great fun in the process."

"I take my hat off to match sponsors, Gullands Solicitors, who do so much for Maidstone, to the team from the Waitrose distribution centre and to Simon Barker for organising the event, and of course to the Spurs Legends who giving their valuable time and energy.

"It was a cracking match with lots of goals – hugely entertaining."

The Spurs Legends won the match, perhaps not surprising as the team included former Spurs players Neil Sullivan, Mark Falco,

David Howells, Clive Wilson, Stuart Nethercott, Kevin Watson and Karl Duguid, but everyone felt a winner.
