Maidstone: Thieves target shoppers at The Mall and Week Street

By David Gazet

Police have issued a warning to shoppers after thieves targeted visitors to Maidstone shopping centres.

One victim was targeted in The Mall around 1pm yesterday while the second happened in Week Street at 11.30am this morning.

In both cases the victims were in their 60s and 70s and were distracted while purses containing cash and bank cards were stolen from their bags.

Mark Hedges, Maidstone community safety unit inspector, said: "While these offences are not common, I would remind shoppers to be careful when out and about to avoid becoming a victim of opportunist thieves.

"Never leave handbags unattended on top of prams, shopping trolleys, wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Always keep them zipped up and where you can see them, and avoid leaving wallets in back pockets."

"Using a purse chain can prevent thefts and shoppers in Maidstone can collect one from the "Ask Me More’ information desk at The Mall while stocks last."

Anyone with information about the thefts should contact 01622 604100 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 quoting reference number YY/33142/17.
