A new lunch club for seniors has moved into an “underutilised” space based at a social housing complex.
The initiative is the idea of businessman Roger Hydes, who recognised the Golding Homes day room in St Stephen’s Square, Tovil, near Maidstone, was rarely used except as a polling station on election day.
He asked if the housing association would allow him to operate a lunch club there for pensioners, and the housing association agreed, letting him have the premises free of charge.
Tovil Parish Council chipped in with a £4,000 grant.
After several weeks spent renovating the garden area which had fallen into disrepair, Mr Hydes, assisted by his wife Tina and a few doughty volunteers, were able to open the club.
It provides free lunches to local seniors every Tuesday, between 12.30 and 3pm, but also, just as importantly, offers the chance of fellowship and company.
Mr Hydes, who owns Track Training Solutions Ltd, said: “It’s nominally for seniors, but if there are other people stuck at home and feeling lonely and isolated, they are welcome too.”
The club, which has already been running for several weeks, has made a big impact on the local community.
Jenny Baker, 64, from Coombe Road, Tovil, said: “I come every Tuesday. It’s really made a big difference to me. It’s helped build up my confidence and make new friends.
“All the people here are really nice - and the food’s good too. I offered to pay, but Roger wouldn’t take my money.
“Roger and Tina are really helpful - they’ve become the best friends I’ve ever had!”
The opening event held today (June 10) was attended by representatives from Golding Homes, the YMCA and Tovil Parish Council.
Cllr Eileen Lewis said: “I really admire Roger for having the vision to see that this facility was being underutilised, but could become something really good.”
“It has made a really big difference to the community already.”
