Matalan is set to close a shop on land earmarked for housing and move elsewhere.

Hoardings are up in The Mall Maidstone, promoting the retailer's plan to move there later this year.

A full date has not been set, but KentOnline understands it will open in the early summer.

It will replace the old BHS site on the lower level, which has been empty since the retail giant went bust in 2016.

Once open in The Mall, the nearby Broadway Maidstone store will close.

The future of the Broadway store has been in doubt since the Maidstone Borough Council announced it hoped to build flats on the site.

There had been plans for a 15-storey tower block, but public pressure saw those early suggestions thrown out in November.

Matalan has other stores in Ashford, Canterbury, Dartford, Erith and Strood.
