Replacement buses took passengers between Strood and Maidstone West while emergency services attended.

British Transport Police said paramedics were called and a person had been pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman said: "We were called to the line near Snodland railway station at 5.06am on Saturday following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene."

He added: "Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin."

The incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Trains were halted until 7.30am. The first train from Strood was the 7.34 service and from Maidstone West it was the 8.03.

The station is in the High Street and is operated by Southeastern. Its two platforms are linked by a footbridge which also acts as a public footpath.

The bridge was repainted last December as part of a refurbishment by Network Rail. New surfacing, tactile strips, handrails and staircase coverings were installed.

Trains serve Maidstone West, Paddock Wood, Tonbridge, Strood and London St Pancras.
