Maidstone couple fear car may be written off after bin lorry causes thousands of pounds of damage

A Maidstone couple fear their car may be written off after a bin lorry crashed into it.

CCTV footage shows a refuse truck hitting the side of the parked car in Warwick Place around 11.30am on Wednesday.

The driver is seen trying to navigate a tight corner with the assistance of a colleague before striking the vehicle's side.

He then reverses away the truck, which has a large "Watch out" message on the side.

Maidstone resident Hermione Bourne and her partner Micky, 31, say they were left dumbstruck when they found the car later that evening, with no note or explanation for the damage.

It was only after consulting with neighbours that they discovered a refuse truck was to blame.

Hermione said: "We asked amongst local residents for CCTV and were provided footage showing who had caused the damage."

The 30-year-old said she made multiple calls to Maidstone council about the incident, before getting through to waste contractors Biffa.

Hermione said: "We are being made to feel like we are the problem.

"We spent a whole day making many calls, being passed around multiple Biffa employees."

The Maidstone couple say they are now in contact with the firm's insurance department.

Meanwhile, the car has been declared unfit for use and insurers have quoted the repair job at thousands of pounds.

The Maidstone couple say they are yet to receive an apology.

Hermione said: "They have said it is going to cost £2,520 to fix it.

"We are not rich, we have a baby on the way. They probably will write it off."

The couple, who are expecting their first child together, rely on the car, which was purchased for £3,500, to reach hospital appointments.

They have one scheduled next week which Hermione will now need to use a taxi to get to.

A spokesman for Maidstone council said: “We are aware of the incident and passed the details onto Biffa who have made contact with the resident.”

Biffa have been contacted for comment.
