Maidstone woman sent offensive messages to her former partner every day for three months

A woman sent offensive messages to her former partner every day for three months and gave false information about him to the emergency services.

Stephanie Dopson, from Maidstone, also racially abused the man on another occasion and set up a false Facebook account to harass him after their relationship broke down.

The couple had been in an intimate relationship for two years and had a child together, but the romance ended in 2017.

Despite the relationship being over, 35-year-old Dopson continued to send him messages over the years and during a three-month period last year, made calls and sent abusive messages to him every single day.

She also made calls to the emergency services claiming she had serious concerns about her son and on one occasion, while her former partner was away with their child, even got paramedics sent to his home address.

Some of the messages and calls she made were of a threatening nature as well as offensive, and some even told him she wished he was dead.

Dopson, of Springwood Road, Barming, admitted sending text messages of an offensive nature when she appeared before Medway Magistrates' Court on January 18.

The court heard she sent the messages every day for three months between March 1, 2022 and May 30, 2022.

She also admitted racially aggravated harassment after an incident in Strood on June 29 last year and an offence of harassment in relation to the messages she sent and the false call she made to the emergency services.

Terry Knox, prosecuting, told magistrates the incidents had taken their toll on the man and had caused him distress and that after she'd been arrested and bailed she turned up at his home and racially abused him.

Mr Knox added: "She also messaged on Facebook and even set provocative pictures of herself to him.

"He also had to change the settings on his phone so he no longer received calls from withheld numbers."

Magistrates were also told the man had written a victim impact statement about what Dopson had done to him.

In it he said his relationship with her had been highly toxic and that she was unpredictable and he didn't know what she would do next and that he just wanted her to stop contacting him.

The bench was also told during interview Dopson admitted she'd sent the abusive messages but mainly when she'd been drinking alcohol. They were also told she had a small number of convictions.

Wayne Crowhurst, defending, told magistrates Dopson had depression and suffered with anxiety and just wanted more contact with her child.

Magistrates decided to order a pre-sentencing report to be carried out on Dopson and adjourned sentencing until March 17 and granted her bail until then.
