Work to remove M20 footbridge 'on track' despite traffic hell for motorists

These are the latest images of the work being carried out to remove a motorway footbridge, which has closed the M20.

At 10pm on Friday, a four-mile stretch of the motorway was shut in both directions between junctions 4 (Leybourne) and 6 (Blue Bell Hill) – it will reopen Monday.

The closure is to allow for the dismantling of the Teapot Lane Bridge near Aylesford station, as part of a project to turn the stretch of the M20 into a smart motorway.

The bulk of the bridge was removed yesterday, with the rest of the demolition lasting until early Monday morning.

Pictures taken earlier today show the progress made so far.

A spokesman for Kier Group, which is carrying out the work on behalf of Highways England, said yesterday: "Work is on track to allow the motorway to reopen on Monday at 6am."

Highways England is spending £92million creating a smart motorway between junction 3 of the M20 (Borough Green) to junction 5 (Aylesford).

The scheme will replace hard shoulders on both carriageways with an extra lane of traffic, while also installing cameras and emergency stop areas.

However, the closure has caused long tailbacks over the weekend, especially on the A20 – which motorists are using to get round the M20 closure.

Drivers have described the diversion route as "carnage", while queues of traffic can be seen trying to leave the M20 at junction 6 London-bound during the closure.
