Maidstone United manager George Elokobi says a lot of players were found out in 3-3 National League South draw at Worthing

Maidstone manager George Elokobi accused his side of failing to do the basics in their 3-3 draw at Worthing and said a lot of players were “found out”.

The Stones looked set to get away with blowing a 2-0 lead when they went 3-2 up in added time, only to concede immediately.

It was the third time this season Maidstone have conceded an injury-time goal and Elokobi says there are no excuses.

The afternoon started well as Dajon Golding and a TJ Bramble penalty gave the visitors a two-goal cushion.

Harry Ransom pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time and Nick Wheeler levelled with five minutes remaining.

Josh Redfearn’s first Stones goal put the visitors back in front but Temi Babalola earned a point for Worthing in a dramatic finish.

“There were a lot of players that got found out and if we think we’ve scratched the surface, we need to get back to the drawing board,” said Elokobi.

“I’ve said this time and again as a new group (but) there are no excuses now.

“They’ve been together for long enough.

“There are players here that need to get up to speed and at the moment something needs to change and I’m going to change it, and I’m going to change it fast.

“We’re talking about basics and we’re talking about the state of the game, game management.

“We’ve done so well to go two goals up and all of a sudden one or two players started doing their own thing.

“They were playing out of our principles, and we don’t do stuff like that, inviting pressure, and credit to Worthing, they got the goal that was deserved before half-time.

“Did it change my team-talk? No, it didn’t.

“It was time for us to help the players and we spoke at half-time and we knew it was going to be a tougher second half.

“We needed to control possession and, to be honest, I don’t think we did, and nor did we control territory.

“I thought we lacked the basics, and that starts with me to look at it, to make sure we review and then we can help the players.

“But we can only help the players so much because we’ve got what we’ve got in the environment and anyone that can read into that will read into that.”

Maidstone remain unbeaten in National League South but have drawn four of their opening six games.

And having conceded three injury-time equalisers, they could easily have more than 10 points.

Elokobi felt the damage was self-inflicted at Worthing.

“When we train, everyone wants to be a part of it,” he said.

“When it really matters, it’s about that bravery, the courage to be able to land on the ball, pick a pass out, pick a team-mate out but also have runners, and then on the opposite end to do the basics.

“If you’ve got to clear your lines, clear your lines.

“Don’t try and do something different that you’ve never done before and then it’s about us not having to play on the front foot and we’re waiting for someone to take command.

“We’ve got to be on the front foot. George Elokobi’s team plays on the front foot and I’m seeing players being hesitant and it’s costing us, and we’ve got to make sure we get that right.

“If it means I have to look at different personnel, I have to look a different personnel.

“That’s what my job is and I’m paid to do that.

“We haven’t lost but I’m disappointed in the manner of the goals we conceded.

“Even when we scored the third goal, I’m trying to tell the players to stay calm, to concentrate, and it’s criminal, you concede straight off the first attack.

“We have to look at ourselves and we need to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Elokobi confirmed he substituted opening goalscorer Golding before half-time to avoid him picking up a second yellow card.

Golding had been booked for kicking the ball away and, after conceding a foul moments later, was on a final warning.

“My message at the start of the season was don’t do anything to put yourself in a position where you could receive a second yellow, especially when we’re away from home,” said Elokobi.

“The players knew this from day one and it was a silly booking.

“It was something we’ve touched on in training.

“It’s just making sure you don’t do it because we’re looking for all our senior experienced players to be on the pitch. It’s lesson learnt.”
