Maidstone United left-back Ben Brookes leaves the Gallagher Stadium to join National League runners-up York City

Defender Ben Brookes has left Maidstone United for National League football.

The popular left-back was offered a new deal by the Stones after an impressive debut campaign at the Gallagher – but has chosen to join York City.

He scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in 54 appearances, helping the Stones to 26 clean sheets.

Brookes’ performances saw him named in the National League South team-of-the-season and were always going to attract interest from other clubs.

Maidstone said he was leaving to “pursue a fantastic opportunity at a higher level” – and Brookes has since been unveiled as a York player.

The Stones added: “We cannot thank Ben enough for his contribution to the club and wish him every success in his career.”

York, who play at the 8,500-capacity LNER Community Stadium, finished runners-up in the National League last season and are looking to return to the Football League after a nine-year absence.

“Sadly, it is time to say goodbye to a club I’m proud to have played for,” said Brookes, who joined from Chelmsford last summer.

“Grateful to the staff and players for helping me grow this season.

“Thanks to George (Elokobi, manager), Craig (Fagan, assistant manager) and Zach (Foster-Crouch, head of recruitment) for the trust.

“To the fans - the best I’ve played in front of - I’ll never forget the Gallagher Stadium. All the best.”
