Maidstone United striker Jake Cassidy had an unhappy spell at FA Cup opponents Oldham Athletic

Maidstone's FA Cup second-round tie with Oldham will pitch Jake Cassidy against one of his former clubs.

Cassidy joined the Latics, then in League 1, from Wolves in the summer of 2015 but the move turned sour after he broke his leg.

Manager Darren Kelly was sacked a month into the season and Cassidy worked under caretaker boss David Dunn and John Sheridan before leaving the following summer.

Cassidy said: "I started the season well, then I broke my leg three games in and never got back to anywhere near the levels I was at.

“My confidence was gone and I kind of saw the season out.

“A new manager came in, he wasn’t having me on and off the field.

“You get forgotten about quickly in this game, which anyone will tell you.

“I didn’t really play in the second half of the season.

“My head was all over the place and I took a pay-up from Oldham just to leave.

“It was around the time of the birth of my child, so it wasn’t all doom and gloom.

“I took six or seven weeks off to spend time with him.

“I had opportunities to go back into the Football League but they were mainly down south and with a newborn baby it wasn’t something I was willing to do."

Oldham are in League 2 these days but were a Premier League club as recently as 1994.

They spent three years in the top flight after winning the old Division 2 on their plastic pitch under Joe Royle.

The Latics also had some great times in the FA Cup during that era, twice reaching the semi-finals.

In 1990, they drew 3-3 with Manchester United at Maine Road, losing the replay 2-1.

They were up against United again in 1994, this time at Wembley, when only a spectacular last-gasp equaliser from Mark Hughes denied them a place in the final.

It was back to Maine Road for the replay but United proved too strong, winning 4-1.

Oldham also reached the League Cup final as a Division 2 club in 1990, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.
