Why Gold Omotayo joined Maidstone United on loan from Bury

Maidstone beat off competition from a host of National League clubs to land striker Gold Omotayo.

Swiss forward Omotayo joined the Stones on a 35-day loan from League 2 club Bury on Friday.

The big man earned a move to the Football League after scoring 11 times in 16 games for Whitehawk last season.

He grabbed the winner on his Bury debut, against Yeovil in August, and has played eight times for the Shakers.

Omotayo was substituted at half-time against Bromley on Saturday but there's plenty more to come.

Stones boss Harry Wheeler, speaking after the game, said: "Gold's played eight times in League 2 this season, he's scored goals, he's been effective.

"He wasn't so much on the front foot today, he's not fully sharp, but he'll get that.

"There were a lot of teams in this league trying to get him.

"We managed to win that race and now we've just got to try and get the best out of him.

"I think the ideas and the professionalism we bring swung it.

"The way the other players speak about it and how it is here, that attracts people."

Omotayo is likely to start when Maidstone host Dover in the Kent Senior Cup second round tomorrow night.

Whites, who are set to announce Andy Hessenthaler as their new manager, have already confirmed they will field their academy team.
