Golfer Joe Harper achieved a rare feat by hitting a hole-in-one on a par-4.

Harper aced the 278-yard 14th during the Club Championship at Cobtree Manor Park in Maidstone.

The 21-year-old, who plays off scratch, said: “There’s a ditch in front and water at the back of the green but it was time for risk and reward golf as I was chasing the leader at the time.

“It’s not like me because I’m usually pretty conservative.

“I used a three-wood and felt I’d hit it well. From what I could see on the tee, the ball was above ground level.

“It was only when I got closer I realised it was resting on the flag. I was rchuffed. I’ve had a few holes-in-one but none in a main competition and it was great to do it on a par-4.”

Harper’s hole-in-one brought him back into contention but he missed out on victory at the final hole. The tournament was won by youngster George Cockayne (h3).
