Tonbridge boss Steve McKimm can't see why rivals keep talking about his club

Steve McKimm can't understand why rival managers feel the need to talk about Tonbridge.

Folkestone boss Neil Cugley claims Angels under-achieved in the Bostik Premier last season as the clubs prepare to meet at Cheriton Road on Bank Holiday Monday.

McKimm happens to agree with his opposite number but that's not the point.

The Tonbridge boss said: "I've read what Neil's said about us and it's a fair assessment.

"I could say Folkestone over-achieved but I'm not like that. We know what we didn't do well last year and we're trying to rectify it.

"People always seem to talk about Tonbridge Angels and I don't get it. We're in the same league as them.

"We're not Maidstone, Dover, Ebbsfleet or Dartford.

"We're Tonbridge Angels and we've been at the level we're at for five years.

"We only had three seasons in the Conference South so I don't get where this 'big club' thing comes from.

"We're well-supported but we're a volunteer, community-owned club.

"Everyone strives to be better but unfortunately we're perceived as something we're not.

"We're a hard-working club, run by volunteers who put a lot of hours in, like every other non-league club.

"We'll go about our business quietly and if we don't get the results we want, we'll move on and keep trying."

Joe Turner scored the winner as Tonbridge beat Burgess Hill 1-0 on Saturday.

Victory made it seven points from three games, with Angels still to concede a league goal.

They face two away games over the long weekend with a trip to Margate on Saturday preceding Folkestone.

McKimm said: "I really don't know why the league have given us two away games. It's a strange one.

"We normally have one at home and one away over the bank holiday weekend so I don't know how they've worked this out.

"We're pleased with how things are going.

"We've not conceded a goal but's it's not that we've set up defensively, we're just defending well.

"We're still attacking and creating loads of chances."

Summer signing Alex Read scored a hat-trick as Tonbridge beat Sittingbourne 3-2 in the Kent Senior Cup first round on Tuesday.
