Maidstone United striker Deon Moore says he has a big point to prove at the Gallagher Stadium

Maidstone striker Deon Moore feels he has a big point to prove this season - and he’s landed the perfect platform to do it.

Moore scored his first Stones goal in a 2-0 home win over Hampton & Richmond on Tuesday to cap another impressive performance from the hardworking frontman.

A terrific header from Leo Hamblin’s cross set United on their way to a first National League South win of the season after successive 1-1 draws against Hemel Hempstead and Torquay.

Moore arrived at the Gallagher with a modest goal record in club football but brings so much more to the team with his all-round game and ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play.

He showed that with his involvement in Maidstone’s goals against Hemel and Torquay, scored by Dajon Golding and John Gilbert respectively.

Manager George Elokobi, confident the goals would come, has total faith in the Guyana international to be the No.9 United need.

And the 26-year-old, who finished last season at Welling, is determined to deliver.

“From the minute I stepped foot in the club, it really makes a difference when you’ve got, not even just the manager, but the whole backroom staff, rooting for you,” said Moore.

“We work closely on what positions to get in, how to get the ball, how to receive the ball, how to get in the box, and this club’s fantastic right down from the staff to the fans.

“You can feel it.

“Honestly, I’ve loved playing here so far and it’s always nice when you can repay that by performances on the pitch and goals.”

Moore, who has also played for Peterborough, Bristol Rovers, Dulwich Hamlet, Sutton and Woking, arrived at Maidstone on trial this summer but Elokobi and his staff quickly saw the qualities they were looking for and a deal was announced.

The striker added: “It can be difficult not knowing whether you’re coming or going but it’s not just myself, especially at this level, sometimes you’ve got a point to prove.

“Definitely, myself, I’ve got a big point to prove and with the platform here, at Maidstone, I don’t think I could have picked a better place for me in my career.

Elokobi’s praise for Moore

“I think this is the perfect place for me, and myself and the team could do something special this season.

“The gaffer, I think he knows everything else I can do, it’s not just scoring.

“I work with the gaffer and Craig (Fagan, assistant boss) every day and it’s just about how can I get a few more goals to round off the performances.

“People come to watch and I hope they see what I can do other than scoring but, at the end of the day, I’m a striker, that is what I’m there to do, and it’s good to get the first one.

“I’m confident that will continue.”

Maidstone’s name didn’t feature prominently among the fancied sides in National League South, despite successive play-off campaigns, owing largely to the money being spent by others.

But they’re looking like a team and the players aren’t at the club to make up the numbers.

Moore said: “I’m not sure what everyone else is saying but within our changing room and our environment, we all know what our ambitions are and what we expect.

“If people want to underestimate us or they don’t want to be talking about us, we have a point to prove and it’s not just myself.

“I think a lot of people in that changing room have a point to prove and I think we’ll do some special things.”

Maidstone go into the Bank Holiday weekend unbeaten in their opening three games and would have maximum points but for injury-time equalisers against Hemel and Torquay.

They visit newly-promoted AFC Totton on Saturday and meet Chelmsford at the Gallagher on Monday (both 3pm).

Playing two games in three days isn’t easy but Moore and his team-mates are up for the challenge.

“It is tough but we’ve got a great team around us who take care of us, so we’re not ones to make excuses,” he said.

“It’s challenging on the body but everyone else in the league has to do it, so it’s not like it’s just us.

“There are no excuses and, hopefully, if we can get another couple of wins, that’s us set up great for the beginning of the season, even though we probably know we should have nine points from nine.”

As well as his club commitments, Moore will surely get more opportunities to play for Guyana.

He has an excellent record of five goals in 12 caps on the international scene, a ratio he would love to replicate at United.

“Internationally, I’ve played more up front,” said Moore.

“I’ve played wide at previous clubs but internationally I’m more of an out-and-out No.9.

“It’s a different type of football to playing in England but playing out there is fantastic.

“It’s a great experience and I’m just trying to replicate the goalscoring record that I have out there here.”
