Maidstone United manager Harry Wheeler says his side were "near-perfect" against Wrexham

Harry Wheeler said Maidstone’s performance against National League leaders Wrexham was “near-perfect”.

Manager Wheeler felt the Dragons were the best team he’s seen since taking charge at the Gallagher Stadium.

So it said plenty about the progress United have made to be disappointed with a 1-1 draw.

Maidstone led through Simon Walton’s magnificent second-half strike, with Wrexham levelling seven minutes later from substitute Bradley Walker’s deflected effort.

Wrexham drop to third after the draw while Maidstone remain 18th, a point clear of the bottom four.

Wheeler said: “I thought we played very, very well.

“It was a near-perfect performance and it says a lot about us that a team that are top of the league have had to get a deflected goal to take a point.

“I think they’re the best side we’ve played this season from the teams that have beaten us and the teams we’ve beaten.

“They’re a very, very good team and a deflected goal got them a point.

“It happens and fair play to them, they take their shots. They shoot more than any team I’ve seen.

“If you keep doing that, in the end, law of averages, something will go for you.

“They kept doing it and in the end they’ve got something from it.

“The boys are a little bit disappointed in there but that shows how far they’ve come to be disappointed after playing the top of the league and getting a draw.”

Walton is in the team to put out fires but showed another side to his game with a 25-yard strike for the opener.

Wheeler said: “It’s a great strike. He gets a few in training like that. He doesn’t shoot enough.

“I said to all of them, use Wrexham as an example.

“We don’t shoot enough, and they take a lot, and second half we did.

"It’s a great finish from a lad that deserves that because his attitude is fantastic for this club and he’s a massive asset.

“He’s an intelligent footballer so he gets in the right areas.

“First half he’s had two and the ball falls to him in areas like that because he gets his body in the way.

“He’ll get a couple more this season. I won’t get carried away and say he’ll get any more than a couple but he deserved that. I’m pleased for him.

“He’ll probably get more bookings than goals but if we can reverse that, then we’ve got an even better chance.”
