Maidstone United caretaker manager Steve Watt proud to have taken charge

Steve Watt says he is proud to have managed Maidstone if his time as caretaker boss is up.

Watt believes Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Salford may have been his final game as United work towards appointing a new manager.

He’s lost all three of his matches 1-0, with United dropping to 22nd place in the National League.

Watt, who hasn’t applied for the job, said: “It’s been a proud moment, even though it’s been as caretaker.

“I was extremely proud when I came to the club as a player and was eventually given the armband then.

“To be asked to be caretaker, it’s a very proud moment.

“I’m disappointed we’ve not got more to show for my three games, three 1-0 defeats.

“On another day you could be sitting with three points from those three games but we don’t do the basics well enough as a team and it’s costing us games.”

Watt has seen signs of improvement - they’ve been harder to beat - but United have rarely looked like scoring.

It was a similar story at Salford where Shamir Mullings, having earlier missed a big chance, headed into his own goal from a corner to give Salford victory.

Watt, missing captain Stuart Lewis (hamstring), Blair Turgott (suspended) and Joe Quigley (international duty), said: “I just said to the boys again, we just seem to find ways to lose games of football.

“It seems to be the pattern of our season. It’s another game we’ve lost by a single goal.

“We have the best chance of the game and we don’t take it and then we kick ourselves in the teeth.

“That should be a 0-0 game after the first half, minimum, coming away with a hard-earned point.

“You’re just disappointed that you’ve lost three games on the trot 1-0 due to poor goals conceded.

“I wouldn’t say we played particularly well but I thought we worked hard, we matched Salford and we stopped them doing what they wanted to do, particularly in the second half.

“I didn’t think we imposed our game on them enough, I didn’t think we had enough shots and efforts on goal.

“We had more than what we’ve been having but when Sham goes through one-on-one, at a place like this, you have to score.

“We nullify a team like Salford, who have been scoring freely, and it’s pleasing but we have to take our chances at the other end.

“It’s disappointing that we score the goal that gives them a win.”
