Maidstone United 2-2 Barnet FA Trophy match report - Barnet win 4-3 on penalties

Maidstone's Wembley dream is over after losing to Barnet on penalties in the FA Trophy Quarter-Finals.

The tie went the distance after a 2-2 draw at the Gallagher Stadium, with the Bees winning 4-3 on spot-kicks.

Sol Wanjau-Smith, who scored from the spot in normal time, hit the bar in the shoot-out and Jack Barham's effort was saved.

Roarie Deacon gave Maidstone an early lead but goals from Finley Potter and David Moyo put Barnet in front by the break.

Wanjau-Smith’s Panenka spot-kick drew United level as United made a flying start to the second half but, with no further goals, the tie went to penalties.

Bivesh Gurung was rewarded for his bright midweek substitute appearance at Wealdstone with a start as caretaker boss George Elokobi made two changes.

Former Barnet player Mark Marshall also came into the side, with Tushaun Walters and James Alabi the players to make way.

The FA Trophy has been keeping Maidstone’s season alive as the team hurtle towards National League relegation and that reflected in a lively atmosphere in the build-up to kick-off.

Optimism increased further when the Stones took the lead with one of their first attacks but with the hosts vulnerable from balls into their box, the Bees turned the tables to lead by half-time.

Maidstone went in front in the 15th minute with a well-worked goal.

Josh Shonibare ran on to a ball down the right channel and played the ball inside to George Fowler, who in turn teed up Deacon in the box.

Deacon’s first-time finish gave Laurie Walker no chance but the Stones forward injured himself in the process and eventually went off before half-time.

The lead lasted just eight minutes, with Potter gifted a simple header from Ryan De Havilland’s corner.

Marshall volleyed wide from Shonibare’s cross and drove an effort just past the post as Maidstone threatened to regain the lead.

But Maidstone were looking shaky at the back and fell 2-1 down in the 37th minute.

The ball came back in after Sam Beard’s corner was partially cleared and while Dan Barden saved well from Potter, the loose ball was finished by Moyo.

Barnet substitute Nicke Kambamba had the ball in the net just before half-time after Barden lost the ball on the edge of his own box but the linesman’s flag went up for a foul on the Stones keeper.

Maidstone won their first three corners of the tie in a bright start to the second half.

They threatened from the second one, with Sam Bone’s header blocked after Dominic Odusanya nodded the ball back across goal.

Elokobi’s men went on to level in the 53rd minute after Wanjau-Smith was fouled just inside the box.

He quickly grabbed the ball - determined to score his first Stones goal - and delivered in style with an ice-cool Panenka-style spot-kick down the middle.

Barham fired over with a shot on the turn midway through the half as Maidstone continued to take the game to the Bees.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action in the last 20 minutes, with penalties looking the most likely outcome.

Regan Booty, Dominic Odusanya and Shonibare were Maidstone's successful penalty-takers.

Harry Pritchard, Kabamba, De Havilland and Idris Kanu scored the Barnet spot-kicks.
