Maidstone United 1 Tonbridge Angels 1 match report: George Elokobi’s side all but guaranteed National League South play-off place despite Angels comeback

Maidstone are virtually assured of a National League South play-off place despite being held by Tonbridge in the early kick-off on Easter Monday.

The Stones are three points clear of Weston going into the final day after the Seagulls lost 2-0 to title-chasing Truro in their 3pm match.

But with a significantly better goal difference - +32 compared to their rivals’ + 16 - George Elokobi’s men are all but guaranteed a top-seven finish.

A point at Farnborough on Saturday will make absolutely sure.

Aaron Blair gave Maidstone the lead with his 20th goal of the season in front of a bumper crowd of 3,670 at the Gallagher Stadium.

But Angels defender Ethan Sutcliffe scored a second-half equaliser for the visitors as the 1pm kick-off ended level.

Maidstone moved back into the play-off places with their 4-0 Good Friday win at Welling while Angels arrived in 15th place and looking for their first points under caretaker manager Scott Wagstaff.

A medical incident in the home end in just the third minute led to a lengthy delay.

Thankfully, all seemed to be well as the supporter was wheeled across the pitch to the medical room after assistance from both clubs’ physios.

When the action resumed, Maidstone were well on top as they set about taking another step towards a play-off place.

They got after the visitors but the Angels defence held firm, including a block from Jamie Fielding to deny George Fowler.

United’s pressure paid off with a 24th-minute opener.

It was one for keeper Matt Rowley to forget as he flapped at Temi Eweka’s flick-on from a Ben Brookes long throw.

The ball fell to Ruben Shakpoke, who helped it goalwards, and Blair got the final touch on the line.

Tonbridge showed more attacking intent after falling behind, winning a free-kick in a dangerous area and putting several balls into the box.

They went close in first-half added time when on-loan Wycombe man Christie Ward fired over from the edge of the box after collecting Harry Ottaway’s neat pass.

Blair flashed a first-time effort over from an Eweka flick early in the second half, while Sutcliffe worked Alexia Andre Jr with a header at the other end.

Tonbridge were still very much in the game and levelled in the 65th minute.

Ex-Stones loanee Liam Vincent’s long throw was flicked on by Ottaway and centre-half Sutcliffe finished well.

Angels, buoyed by the goal, threatened again when space opened up for Sean Shields whose low strike was parried by Andre Jr.

Wagstaff’s side were looking increasingly dangerous, sensing a second goal was there for them, with Bailey Akehurst curling a free-kick narrowly wide.

Brookes and Charlie Seaman sent free-kicks into the wall in quick succession as Maidstone hit back before Fowler’s diving header from a Brookes corner missed by inches.

An even better chance followed when Blair rounded keeper Rowley from Riley Court’s through ball but he delayed his shot and hit the side-netting.

A superb challenge by Angels defender Nazir Bakrin denied Shaq Coulthirst an added-time winner.
