Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders odds-on favourite to take over at Macclesfield Town

Maidstone boss Jay Saunders is odds-on favourite to be named Macclesfield's new manager.

He is priced 1/10 with Skybet to succeed John Askey, who left the National League champions to take over at Shrewsbury last week.

Saunders has been in charge of his hometown club for seven seasons, winning three promotions and keeping United in the National League for the past two years.

He didn't feature at all in the early markets to succeed Askey but there's been big movement today.

The bookmakers seem to think it's a done deal but there's nothing official from either side.

Saunders, 39, may not be an obvious choice to Macclesfield fans among high-profile contenders like Keith Curle but his stock in non-league is high.

He also led Maidstone to a stunning 4-1 win at Macclesfield in September.

The chance to manage in League 2 may well appeal but whether Saunders wants to work that far from home - Moss Rose is 220 miles away - is another matter.

Just last month Stones co-owner Terry Casey said he wanted Saunders to stay at the Gallagher for many years to come.
