Former Maidstone United manager Jay Saunders is favourite for the Macclesfield Town job again

Jay Saunders is once again the bookies' favourite to take over at Macclesfield.

The job is available for the second time in four months after the Silkmen sacked Mark Yates following a poor start to the season.

BetVictor make former Stones boss Saunders the 3/1 favourite to take over at Moss Rose, with the Cheshire club winless at the foot of League 2.

Saunders was their first choice to succeed John Askey in June but he turned down the position to stay with Maidstone.

He said at the time: "It's been a tough couple of days.

“I had a lot to think about and weigh up but I've turned it down.

“Macclesfield approached the club to speak to me and it was weird because somehow it's got out.

“That was the biggest pulling point, the fact every manager wants to go as high as they can and it was an opportunity to manage in the Football League.

“It's obviously flattering to be asked to do it because it shows someone appreciates what you've done and the work you've put in.

“It was tough, I'll be honest with you, I was very, very close to going but I've made the right decision and hopefully we can kick on and have a good season.”

Saunders left Maidstone by mutual consent at the end of August and has been helping out Bromley on a casual basis while he waits for his next job in management.

The 39-year-old retains all the qualities that attracted Macclesfield in the first place, with his reputation unaffected by his Stones exit.

Danny Whitaker (5/1), Michael Brown (6/1) and Neil Howarth (10/1) are also among the contenders, while Chris Kinnear, sacked by Dover on Friday, is priced 16/1.
