Marden’s William Sparrow regains Global Karting League title and wins fully-funded season in former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley’s relaunched FAT Karting League

William Sparrow has regained his national junior title in the Global Karting League.

The 15-year-old, from Marden, dominated the season, topping the leaderboard from start to finish.

He can also look forward to a fully-funded 2025 season in the relaunched FAT Karting League after winning a ‘golden ticket’ prize for his performances in the last four rounds, thanks to a partnership with Rebello Motorsport.

Sparrow attended eight of the nine rounds, finishing with four wins, two second places, a third and a fifth.

His fifth-placed finish came in an eventful final race at Buckmore Park that saw him start from the back of the grid.

He said: “Being my home track that I have raced on since I was six-years-old, I was really looking forward to the final battle on home turf even if it was the first time I had driven the electric race karts there.

“I was putting in the fastest lap times in qualifying and looked good for pole when my kart broke down.

“Unfortunately for me, the track was getting faster towards the end of the session and four people beat my lap time meaning I started in fifth for the pre-final.

“In the pre-final a driver ahead of me misjudged an overtake of another driver, locked his wheels and crashed into me causing me a puncture and retirement from the pre-final.

“It also meant I was starting from the back of the 18-strong grid for the final.

“The final started well for me and by the second corner I had made it up to P9. It had started to drizzle a bit and I thrive in the rain so I managed to get past drivers throughout the following laps.

“The session had been cut two minutes short and I finished in P5, setting the fastest lap and wondering if those extra minutes lost could have seen me finish on the podium. However, the championship had already been won so I was able to drop the Buckmore round and still win the national junior title.

“It has been an incredible year for me and I would like to thank my sponsor Helen Seccombe for her invaluable support.”

Series founder Rob Smedley, an ex-Ferrari F1 engineer, has teamed up with Ferdi Porsche, great grandson of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche, for the relaunched FAT Karting League.

The 2025 series will carry a prize of a fully-funded seat in Formula 4 for 2026, worth £100,000. It’s the largest prize in karting history.

The partnership between Smedley and Porsche has found common ground, with the focus on talent over wealth.
