Gillingham legend and Maidstone United goalkeeper coach Jim Stannard needs prostate operation

A fundraising page has been launched to help Gillingham legend Jim Stannard undergo a prostate operation.

The Gills have donated £1,000 towards a £10,000 target on a Just Giving page, set up by Debbie Caddell.

Stannard, 58, is on the coaching staff at Maidstone United these days, where he worked for free last season.

He made his name as a goalkeeper at Fulham before setting a British record of 29 clean sheets in a season as Gillingham won promotion from the old Division 3 in 1996.

He also played for Southend and has worked as a goalkeeper coach at Crystal Palace and Southampton, as well as non-league Bromley.

Stannard, whose last appearance for Gillingham came in a goalless draw against Manchester City in 1998, recently spoke about his record-breaking exploits in an interview with KentOnline.

With Gillingham’s help, the crowdfunder had reached £3,300 by Wednesday morning.

Caddell wrote: “Jim needs an operation for prostate which due to the current situation in the world with Covid, the NHS waiting list is over a year and unfortunately the PFA will not fund as it’s not football-related.

“Let’s help Jim get his operation and live out his best life.”
