Maidstone’s first summer signing is hoping his move can help him reach greater heights in his career.
Attacking midfielder John Gilbert joins George Elokobi’s beaten 2024/25 National League South play-off finalists after one season at divisional rivals Slough.
“It was my first season at Step 2 last season,” said Gilbert, speaking to Stones TV. "I had some good success from set-pieces.
“I got a few assists and that was big credit to Scotty (player-manager Scott Davies) and the club there.
“I’m looking for that next step now and full-time football at a club like Maidstone can give me the next push to really keep going.”
Gilbert, 25 in August, was initially contacted by Stones head of recruitment Zach Foster-Crouch about a potential move before he spoke with Elokobi.
He has closely followed Maidstone’s progress in recent years, with the club having reached the fifth round of the FA Cup, before they were knocked out by Coventry in February 2024.
As Maidstone announced he had signed, Gilbert said: “I’m buzzing. It’s a huge club.
“I’ve looked at this club for quite a while - they’ve had some fantastic cup runs - and I cannot wait to get going.”
While his preferred position is as a No.10, Gilbert is more than happy to play elsewhere if he’s asked to.
“I’m an attacking midfielder - a No.10 preferably - but I don’t mind (playing on) either wing,” he revealed.
“I’m quite a versatile player that can play in many different positions, as I did last season. I’m definitely a player that likes to press the opposition.
“I will give 110 percent in every single game and I think the main aim will just be to get three points every single week.”
One-time Walton & Hersham player Gilbert turned out for Slough in their 1-1 National League South draw at the Gallagher Stadium in mid-October - and cannot wait to do so again, only with the Stones fans behind him this time.
He said: “It was a fantastic atmosphere.
“As I’ve seen, it was the second-highest attendances last season, just behind Torquay. What an atmosphere and what a club.
“I cannot wait to get the fans on my side this time.”
On social media, Slough’s Davies posted: “Congratulations, Gilbs!
“You’ll be a fans’ favourite in no time when they see what you give to the team.
“@zfc1 (Foster-Crouch), I’m blocking you from now on, mate.
“You won’t be able to get hold of me!”
