New Maidstone striker Hamzad Kargbo isn’t one to pass up a shooting opportunity.
That will be music to the ears of Stones fans who have seen their side go four games without a goal.
Kargbo made his debut as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 defeat by Maidenhead a fortnight ago.
It was his first action in months, having been without a club since leaving Newport at the end of last season.
The big man made his League 2 debut for the Welsh club on the opening day of the 2024/25 campaign but suffered a dislocated shoulder and required surgery.
He went on loan to Chippenham, scoring a wonder goal at Hemel Hempstead, but injury ended his time there.
The former QPR youngster is desperate to put his injury problems behind him and show what he’s all about.
His brilliant volley at Hemel highlights his willingness to try his luck whenever he has a sight of goal.
“That’s probably my best goal so far,” said Kargbo, 23
“It was a great goal.
“I remember the flick-on, it’s bounced back and whenever I have an opportunity to shoot, I’ll shoot.
“I just took the shot and it went in.
“I’m always up for a shot.”
Kargbo is enjoying himself at the Gallagher after linking up with manager George Elokobi.
He’s not match-fit but that will come with time.
Fingers crossed, he can stay injury-free.
“It’s been good,” said Kargbo.
“The manager’s been good to me, the players have been good to me.
“There’s good energy and the fans are class.
“We’ve just got to start producing and helping each other out on the pitch even more.
“I want to try my best to help the team.
“I’ve been unfortunate with injuries but that’s football and that’s life.
“Last season was shoulder and hamstring.
“I just need to get a clear run of games and I’ll be alright.
“I’m getting there with my fitness.
“I’m not 100 per cent but I’m getting there. I just need a run of games.”
Kargbo worked with Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth at QPR.
He felt he was Ainsworth’s type of player after progressing to the first-team squad but injuries got in the way and denied him a Championship appearance.
Kargbo said: “It was good at QPR but when I got put in the first team under Gareth Ainsworth, it was just injuries again that held me back. I’ve been unlucky with that so far.
“He put his arm around me and gave me the confidence.
“I was gutted when I got injured because he really liked me, I was his type of player, a big man up front.
“It’s just one of those things.”
At 6ft4in Kargo is an obvious aerial threat for Maidstone but he’s no one-trick pony.
He said: “It depends how the game is going.
“I can also come to feet and play but I can also be the big man.”
Maidstone visit Dagenham in National League South this Saturday (3pm).
