Maidstone United sign Sutton goalkeeper Ross Worner on loan until the end of the season

Maidstone have signed goalkeeper Ross Worner on loan from Sutton for the rest of the season.

They’ve moved quickly to replace Grant Smith, who was recalled by Lincoln yesterday.

Worner, 29, missed all of last season through injury and started this campaign on loan at Chelmsford.

The highly-rated keeper made four appearances on his return to Gander Green Lane, including two Scottish League Challenge Cup matches, a competition the U’s were invited into after last season’s third-placed finish in the National League.

Sutton boss Paul Doswell told his club website: “Ross has done very well in the four games that he has played this season, keeping three clean sheets, but in turn Jamie Butler has done nothing wrong and has been superb for us last season and this.

“Ross obviously wants to play more regularly, and to be honest we can’t afford to have two top-line keepers at the club and only one playing, so it’s a move that makes sense all round.”

Worner started his career at Woking, joining Charlton, Aldershot and then AFC Wimbledon.

He signed for Sutton in 2015 and was in goal for their FA Cup fifth-round tie against Arsenal in February 2017.
