Maidstone United joint caretaker boss Simon Walton perplexed by home record

Simon Walton is at a loss to explain Maidstone's desperate home form.

The Stones have won only one of their 14 league games at the Gallagher Stadium this season and are four points from safety after losing 4-2 to Maidenhead on Tuesday night.

They've won FA Cup and FA Trophy ties at home but the 1-0 victory over Barrow last August remains their sole National League success, compared to six on the road.

Joint caretaker boss Walton said: "I think Gareth Southgate would struggle to get us a win at home at the minute to be honest. I’m perplexed.

"All our best performances have come away from home, apart from the cup games.

"I’d be a liar if I stood here and said I know what it is.

"Whether we freeze, whether the atmosphere's too comfortable coming into a nice dressing room where it’s nice and relaxed, with lovely showers and facilities, I don't know.

"We’ve got to appreciate that because if we keep going how we’re going, it isn’t going to be like that where they go and play next year, let me tell you."

Walton's frustration against Maidenhead was clear but he has to tread carefully when it comes to reading the riot act.

There are things to get off his chest but confidence is fragile in Maidstone's position.

Walton said: "To be honest, as harsh as this is going to sound, it’s not a group that you can shout and bawl at because they’re fragile at the minute.

"We are in a position no one wants to be in, confidence was obviously on the floor for the previous few weeks.

"I started shouting and by the end there was just no point because I can shout the same things week in, week out, whether I’m a player, manager, whatever you want to call me.

"The same things aren’t getting through to people and that’s why we are where we are.

"We were never going to win every game, we’re not good enough to win every game, but we’ve got more than enough to get out of trouble, as we have shown.

"Things will be spoken about and dealt with but then we go again on Saturday.

"We can’t get too disheartened.

"We’re not relegated yet, we’re not down, there’s not an R next to our name but the league table doesn’t look as good as it would have done if we’d applied ourselves as we have done the last few games."
