Effigy of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to be burnt at Edenbridge Bonfire Night after digital ID and winter fuel payment backlash

A giant effigy of Sir Keir Starmer is set to be burnt at an annual fireworks festival.

The Edenbridge Bonfire celebration, held at the Recreation Ground, has revealed the Prime Minister will be this year’s guy.

Today (October 5) at 10.30am, the Edenbridge Bonfire Society launched a live stream on its Facebook page to announce who or what the effigy would be of.

The organisers have revealed it will be the PM, who is dressed up as Guy Fawkes, with the words “Starmer the farmer harmer”.

He also appears to have one foot on an electric heater, which references the backlash on Labour’s winter fuel payment decision, as well as a mobile phone showing a digital ID tucked into his belt.

A spokeswoman for the event said: "We did have some contenders that we didn't choose – Angela Rayner, Rachel Reeves and Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

"One of the reasons why we didn't choose him is because it is a family event, and we have to think about how they would explain why particular characters have been chosen and the reasoning behind it.

"We didn't think that was a nice message to have to explain to younger viewers. What we have done instead is taken Bonfire Night back to Parliament."

A torch-lit procession will start in the town at around 6.30pm on Saturday, with the fireworks display kicking off a couple of hours later.

Last time, the ticket sales website Ticketmaster, complete with Oasis duo Liam and Noel Gallagher, was set alight, with the previous choice being London Mayor Sadiq Khan after his controversial ULEZ scheme.

Every year since 1994, a 10m-tall celebrity effigy has been burnt as part of the celebrations.

The society has been celebrating Bonfire Night for over 90 years and has been known to feature more than 750 people in its torch-lit parade through Edenbridge High Street.

This year, those involved will be joined by teams from visiting Sussex bonfire societies, along with carnival floats, costumed walking parties and marching bands.

Everyone then makes their way to the Recreation Ground, off Lingfield Road, where there is music as well as food and drink stalls.

During the show, two huge 11m tall effigies, including Guy Fawkes and Sir Keir, will be burnt using a mixture of gunpowder and flames.

It is set to take place on Saturday (November 8).
