West Kent College student makes training video for Aylesford Wildcats

A West Kent College sports student is inspiring young footballers to keep up their training during lockdown.

Megan Abbott, who is studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching, is a coach at the girls-only Aylesford Wildcats club.

She has created a series of coaching videos, posted on YouTube, to ensure that her team, who train at the Aylesford Community Centre, are still perfecting their skills, even in lockdown.

The Wildcats offer girls aged five to 11 the chance to try football for the first time.

Megan, 17, said: “We’ve had quite a few incredible young girls turn up to play football at the centre this year.

"Seeing them progress in the few weeks we had before lockdown was brilliant.

“I knew we had to carry on with their football somehow, so that they were still practising."

"So, I thought of a few basic but fun activities for them to do at home - focussing on ball mastery."

Megan’s lecturer, Bethany Smith, said “We’re really proud of her. She has demonstrated some great leadership and coaching skills."

There is a national network of SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centres to encourage girls into the beautiful game.
