Traffic stopped after M26 lorry and van crash

Traffic is finally moving after being halted for two hours following a pile-up involving lorries and other vehicles on a motorway in rush-hour.

Drivers were temporarily on the M26 Eastbound between M25 junction 5 and Junction 2A following a crash between two lorries, a van and a car.

The accident happened at about 4pm on the M26 between junctions 1 and 2A, where Kent Police remain at the scene.

Casualties have been reported but are not believed to be life-threatening.

South East Coast Ambulance Service treated two men for injuries before taking them to a local hospital for further medical attention.

The eastbound carriageway was closed at its junction with the M25 while the vehicles involved were moved to the hard shoulder to await recovery.

It was reopened at 6.11pm and there will be some congestion while the traffic queue clears.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Kent Police was called at 4pm on Monday 4 June regarding a collision involving two lorries, a van and a car on the eastbound carriageway of the M26 between junctions 1 and 2A.

"Officers and South East Coast Ambulance Service are currently at the scene dealing with the incident.

"The eastbound carriageway is currently closed at its junction with the M25."

Highways England said in a Tweet it is working to clear the carriageway but was unable to say how long it will take.

Just after 6pm, officials said were they in the process of reopening the carriageway.

They said traffic within the closure will be allowed to move past scene first, with remaining traffic prior to M25 J5 diverted until the closure is fully removed.
