Offenders driving while using their phones face a maximum fine of £200 and six penalty points on their licence. The minimum penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three points.

Police Constable Georgina Bryans said: "These probationer officers have gained valuable experience interacting with the public and I hope these results will act as a deterrent to other motorists.

'There is no excuse for using a mobile phone at the wheel, or driving above the speed limit, and choosing to do so needlessly endangers the lives of road users.

"We regularly carry out operations of this nature and will continue to do so."
