Plans for a new Aldi on the site of a former school have been submitted.
Medway Council has received a planning application for a new branch of the supermarket giant in Maidstone Road, Chatham, where St John Fisher School used to be.
The German chain took it over in January this year and launched a public consultation with local residents.
Aldi claims the new store will bring £5 million worth of investment to the area, will create 50 new full-time equivalent jobs, and regenerate the disused site.
The application asks for approval to demolish the former school, which has been vacant since St John Fisher relocated to its campus on City Way, Rochester, in 2022.
The 1.8 acre site would then see the supermarket built with 104 parking spaces, including seven disabled bays, and 10 cycle spaces.
There will also be four electric vehicle charging points, as well as the infrastructure to support the installation of a further 22 charging points at a later date.
The application also says the store will make as many changes as it can to stay in keeping with the local area, including improvements such as replacing a concrete boundary wall with a red brick wall similar to what had been originally there.
Additionally, 26 new trees, along with a mix of native hedges, shrubs, grasses and wildflower meadows would be planted across the site.
The new store would be located within the Maidstone Road conservation area, which was designated in 2004 because of the number of buildings nearby built as early as 1874 and many built in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Adjacent to the plot which Aldi has applied for, the Edwardian house, which also formed part of the St John Fisher school is the subject of a planning application for 11 flats and 8 houses.

The application was submitted on April 8 and is currently being considered by Medway Council’s planning department.
