Gillingham schools walk 943 miles for Medway Maritime Hospital

Pupils and teachers have supported a hospital's Covid-19 response from their back gardens.

Those at The Westbrook Trust – which comprises Brompton Westbrook Primary School, St Margaret’s Infant School and Byron Primary School in Gllingham – have been running, jogging or walking Miles at Home to support Medway Maritime Hospital.

Inspired by The Proclaimers hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", the school aimed for everyone to clock up at least 500 miles in the Miles at Home challenge on Saturday, May 9, and wanted to raise at least £500 for the hospital.

However, teachers, pupils and parents actually managed to travel 943 miles and raised £4,495.

The individuals who took part either ran, walked or jogged in their home or garden, or as part of their permitted daily exercise.

Steph England, spokesman for The Westbrook Trust, said: "We are really grateful to our fantastic communities for their engagement and generosity in our Miles at Home project.

"We are delighted to have raised money to support Medway hospital. We were inspired by the fantastic work of the NHS and other fundraising stories in the news. "
