Man, 25, arrested on suspicion of serious sexual assault at new development along River Medway in Chatham

Police investigating an allegation of a “serious sexual assault” on a woman at a new apartment block have made an arrest.

Forensic officers and another police vehicle were seen heading into Pioneer Wharf in Chatham shortly before 9pm yesterday.

The block of flats, which sit opposite The Pentagon shopping centre and Chatham Waterfront bus station, are located at the junction of Medway Street and Globe Lane.

Police say a man has now been arrested in connection with an allegation of a serious sexual assault on a woman at an address in Medway Street.

A spokesperson said: “The incident was reported at 1.49pm on Friday and later the same day a 25 year old local man was arrested and taken into custody.

“An investigation is underway including forensic examination at the scene.”

He has been conditionally bailed pending further inquiries until October 3.

The waterfront development on the River Medway and is part of Chatham's regeneration scheme.

Pioneer Wharf, a block consisting of 71 homes, was launched last year.

Medway Development Company, the construction arm of Medway Council, is behind the scheme as well as the nearby redevelopment of Mountbatten House and the Strood Civic Centre, which will see a total of more than 350 new homes built.
