The force said the woman was walking along the road at around 2pm when she paused to stop, before being approached by a “large breed with black fur”.

It is then reported the dog bit her hand causing serious injury, but it is unclear whether the dog’s owner was present.

Officers attended along with paramedics and the woman was taken to a West Sussex hospital where she was later discharged, but continues to recover at home.

Subsequently, a 57-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control. He has since been bailed.

The dog, who is understood to be a German Shepherd, was also seized.

The force said: “The investigation is ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone with relevant information, including CCTV or dashcam, to come forward.”

Witnesses should contact Kent Police on 01634 792209 quoting 46/91470/25.
