Arson investigation launched after cars torched in Chestfield Close, Rainham

An arson probe has been launched after a burning car exploded in a cul-de-sac.

Officers are investigating the incident which happened at around midnight on Thursday (March 6) in Chestfield Close, Rainham.

A video was shared with KentOnline, showing the entire vehicle ablaze and a loud blast being heard at the end.

It is understood that two fire engines were called to the scene and police arrived shortly after.

A spokesman for the force said: “We were called to assist at around midnight following a report that two cars were on fire.

“Officers attended and the fires were extinguished by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. There were no reported injuries.”

A witness, who does not want to be named, says they first heard glass breaking and then spotted the flames.

“I then saw someone running and jumping into a car, then driving off,” they added.

“I was shocked. It’s a pretty quiet street and we’ve got a primary school nearby. It’s not what you’d expect.”

The incident is being treated as suspicious and an arson investigation is ongoing.
