Man arrested on suspicion of making 'hoax call' about someone in water as police searched River Medway in Rochester

A man has been arrested accused of making a hoax call to police about a someone jumping from a town centre bridge.

Officers and emergency service colleagues were called to Rochester Bridge over the River Medway following a report of someone in the water on Saturday night.

A search was carried out and it was established the call was not genuine, police said.

The call out at 10.44pm saw "numerous emergency services deployed", a police spokesman said.

A 37-year-old man from Rochester was arrested on suspicion of wasting police time and assaulting two emergency workers.

He has since been released under investigation pending further investigation.

Three fire engines attended the scene along with the Water Safety Unit and spent almost two hours at the scene, a fire service spokesman confirmed.

Ambulance crews attended in a car, an ambulance and the police and ambulance joint response unit.

Coastguard teams also attended the incident.
