Girl left with concussion after hitting head during Arriva bus journey

A mum has spoken about her horror after her 10-year-old daughter smashed her face on the back of a bus seat.

Rebecca Elliot, of Albatross Avenue in Strood, was on the 700 bus with her daughter Milly-Jane when it happened.

They were at the Elaine Avenue Stop on Darnley Road around 3.45pm when the bus driver broke abruptly at a bus stop.

Rebecca, who has two other children, said: "She was screaming, she physically hit her head on the next seat in front of her.

"The bus was quite full and I was sitting on the seat in front of her and she was behind me."

Another girl hit her knee on the fire escape window, cracking the window and subsequently covering the floor in glass.

Rebecca described how the driver stopped the bus to make a phone call and then proceeded to sweep the shards from the floor and carried on the journey.

The 29-year-old continued: "She (the driver) didn't even ask me if my girl was alright, didn't ask anyone on the bus if they were hurt."

It happened last Thursday and Rebecca complained to Arriva but is still awaiting a response, but also approached the bus station in person to further highlight her dismay.

She said: "I went to the bus depot to make a complaint in person, but they just didn't care, they were just smirking at me."

The following day the mother and daughter had to take the same bus to travel to the hospital, and said shards of glass were still on the floor.

Since the accident Milly-Jane has been too afraid to take a bus.

"This morning when we had to get the bus she didn't even want to get on it," she said.

"She shouldn't have to be scared to get on a bus, hopefully she will get over it."

On Saturday Rebecca took Milly-Jane to the hospital after she was sick and complained of having a headache and were told she had suffered a mild concussion.

General manager at the Arriva Gillingham depot, George Tsangarides, said: "We are aware of the reported incident and an internal investigation is underway.

"The safety of our passengers and staff is paramount, and we'd like to send our sincere apologies to the passenger."
